GLÉAS - Traditional Irish Music Ensemble


Calling all young traditional musicians in North Co. Dublin!

The Irish Institute of Music & Song, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin is seeking dedicated young traditional musicians to join its new teenage traditional ensemble, ‘GLÉAS’

Working under the direction of leading traditional musicians Dr. Seán McElwain, Carol Keane and Niall Preston, the GLÉAS ensemble will present teenage traditional musicians from north Co. Dublin with exciting performance and workshop opportunities - including scheduled performances with international visiting groups!

Open to teenage traditional musicians between the ages of 13-18 years, applicants should be of an intermediate/advanced level with at least 3 years experience.

Start Date- Tuesday, 17th September 2024

GLÉAS Ensemble Directors

Seán McElwain


From Monaghan orginially, Seán is member of the award-winning Irish traditional group Téada, performing frequently throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. He is the recipient of a TG4 Gradam Ceoil award (2016) for his ‘Our Dear Dark Mountain With The Sky Over It' project, which focused on the music of the Sliabh Beagh region of north Monaghan/east Fermanagh.

Carol Keane


An Irish traditional fiddler and classical pianist, Carol hails from Skerries, County Dublin where she has been playing and teaching music from a young age. A graduate in Music Education from Griffith College Dublin, Carol is an ever-present in the traditional music of North County Dublin, and serves as Co-Director of the ‘Skerries Traditional Music Weekend’

Niall Preston


An All-Ireland and world champion bodhrán player, Niall is much sought after as a performer and teacher. The holder of a Degree in Music (DIT), as well as a Masters in Ethnomusicology (UL) he has toured extensively worldwide and performed with well known artists including Mairtín O Connor and Donal Lunny among others.
